Designations of origin and geographical indications of products
A designation of origin of a product is the name of a place, area or, in exceptional cases, country used to designate a product originating in that place, area or country, where the quality or characteristics of that product are exclusively or essentially determined by the geographical environment, with its characteristic natural and human factors, and the production, processing and preparation of that product take place exclusively in the defined place, area or country.
A geographical indication of a product is the name of a place, an area or, in exceptional cases, a country used to designate a product originating in that place, area or country, where that product has a specific quality, reputation or character which can be attributed to that place, area or country and the production, processing or preparation of that product takes place in the defined geographical place, area or country.
A designation of origin or geographical indication may protect agricultural products and foodstuffs, wine, spirits, aromatised wine products, mineral waters, handicraft products and other products whose resulting quality or characteristics are influenced by natural conditions or are linked to the defined geographical area by tradition, reputation or reputation attributable to the geographical origin.
Agricultural products and foodstuffs, wine, spirits and aromatised wine products may be registered and protected only at European Union level.
