Abstract
The article includes basic information about patents, their significance to a patent owner, and about the patentability of an invention. At the same time, it provides a brief view to particular patent proceeding stages in terms of patent examiner work at the Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic. Attention is paid especially to the running of the most important stage of the proceeding - “the complete search”, the result of which is crucial for granting a patent or the rejection of a patent application. „The complete search“ includes patent search in international patent databases, office registers, non-patent literature as well as in any publicly available information sources. The subsequent substantive examination comprises the evaluation of the patentability of the invention itself, based on the search results.
