The Innovation Contest of the European Patent Office
On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the European Patent Convention on the base of which the European Patent Office was established, the EPO Innovation Contest for university students of EPC member states will be held by the European Patent Office in 2013. The contest gives students opportunity to explore the wealth of available patent documentation and suggest new areas of innovation, particularly in the green technology and sustainable development sectors. Contestants shall be in touch with patent experts of the EPO and of the member states with the support of the European Patent Academy, national patent offices and PATLIB Centres.
The contest is open to students of all disciplines who are at least 18 years old, enrolled at a university, college or equivalent academic institution in one of the Organisation´s member states. There is on entry fee.
Contestants will be asked to define a research project of potential interest for future R&D.
Their paper should include:
1/ A description of a technical problem currently faced in one of the following five fields:
A. Sustainable food production
B. Eco-friendly energy production and storage
C. Waste management, recycling and urban mining
D. Smart transport and traffic management systems
E. Smart house technology
2/ A presentation of the state of the art currently available in the problem area
3/ A general account of the market potential for the suggested solution to the chosen technical problem
The Office will collect applications and then select a single contestant or a team of contestants for each technical field. Interested persons shall submit their CV (max. 2 pages) and the concept of their project describing the problem from the selected field and contribution of a solution.
Selected contestants or teams of contestant will be registereed on a dedicated distance learning programe offering guidance on how to develop your initial idea. The working language of the programme and accompanying online mentoring will be English. The final paper can be submitted in any one of the EPO´s official languages, i. e. English, French or German.
Registration for the programme starts on January 14, 2013 and must be completed by March 15, 2013.

The distance learning programme will be offered from March 18 to June 13, 2013.
The deadline for submitting the final papers is July 13, 2013 at 15.00 hrs. CET.
An international jury will select the winners, who will be invited to attend an award ceremony in Munich on October 17, 2013. The winner in each of five categories will be awarded a prize of EUR 5,000.
